Military Operations Against Al-Shabaab Underway in Eastern Galgaduud
Ceeldheer, Galgaduud – August 14, 2025
The Somali National Army (SNA) has intensified military operations in eastern Galgaduud region, targeting Al-Shabaab fighters in a renewed push to secure the area. The operations, described as large-scale and strategic, are concentrated around the Ceeldheer district and its surrounding villages, where the army has established new forward bases to accelerate the fight against the militant group.
According to senior military officials, additional army units led by top commanders have been deployed to the frontline. This move is part of a broader national strategy to fully liberate territories still under Al-Shabaab control and to restore lasting peace and stability for local communities.
Visit by the Army Ground Forces Commander
The Commander of the Somali National Army’s Ground Forces, Major General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, visited the frontline in Ceeldheer to inspect defense positions and meet with operational leaders. During his visit, he received detailed briefings on the current security situation, battlefield progress, and remaining challenges.
Speaking to the troops, Commander Sahal praised their bravery and recent successes, urging them to intensify the campaign until the group is completely eliminated from the region. He stressed the importance of sustained military pressure combined with community cooperation to ensure that liberated areas remain secure.
The New Phase of the Operation
Military officials confirmed that this new phase of the operation will focus on liberating all remaining areas still under Al-Shabaab’s influence in eastern Galgaduud. Alongside combat efforts, plans are in place to strengthen security in liberated districts to prevent the militants from regaining a foothold.
Local residents have welcomed the army’s presence, expressing hope that this offensive will bring a long-awaited period of peace. Many believe that the security improvements could also pave the way for the return of essential services such as healthcare, education, and trade.
A Strategic Push for Lasting Peace
These ongoing operations in eastern Galgaduud represent a critical step in Somalia’s broader counter-terrorism strategy. The Federal Government, in partnership with its armed forces, has vowed to continue the fight until Al-Shabaab is dismantled and national security is safeguarded.
While the campaign has already achieved notable victories, military experts warn that sustaining control over liberated areas will require a long-term plan involving security sector reform, local governance support, and economic opportunities for the population.
For now, the spotlight remains firmly on Ceeldheer and its surrounding areas, where the Somali National Army’s determination, combined with community backing, could mark a turning point in the fight to free the nation from Al-Shabaab’s grip.
