Somalia-Turkey Relations Strengthened as Erdogan Meets President Hassan Sheikh in Doha
On September 16, 2025, during the emergency summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League in Doha, Qatar, President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, held a bilateral meeting with Somalia’s President, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The discussion focused on humanitarian issues in Gaza and the strengthening of bilateral relations between Somalia and Turkey.
President Erdogan emphasized the urgent need for tougher economic sanctions on Israel, noting that targeted economic measures could lead to tangible results in curbing ongoing aggression in Gaza. “The situation in Gaza demands a firm response and international unity,” Erdogan stated, stressing that economic pressure is one of the most effective tools to stop violations against the Palestinian people.
The leaders also discussed ways the international community can ensure uninterrupted humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza, who have endured continuous attacks for nearly two years. Erdogan called on the global community to unite in support of Palestinians and to amplify their collective voice for justice and relief.
Beyond humanitarian issues, the meeting highlighted the growing partnership between Somalia and Turkey. Areas of collaboration discussed included security, development, and trade, with both leaders agreeing to expand cooperation in the near future. Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to providing continuous support to Somalia, noting that the bilateral ties between the two nations are stronger than ever.
This high-level engagement comes at a critical time as regional and international attention focuses on Gaza’s worsening humanitarian crisis. Many countries have accused Israel of war crimes and mass atrocities against Palestinians, heightening the need for coordinated global action.
The Doha summit brought together leaders from Muslim and Arab nations to address escalating tensions and to develop strategies to ensure protection for civilians. Somalia’s active participation in this dialogue reflects the nation’s growing role in international diplomacy and its commitment to humanitarian advocacy.
The meeting between Erdogan and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud not only reinforces Somalia’s bilateral relations with Turkey but also signals Somalia’s dedication to promoting peace and human rights in the international arena. Strengthened diplomatic ties and cooperative development initiatives are expected to pave the way for greater regional stability and mutual prosperity.
As the world watches Gaza closely, the joint efforts of Somalia and Turkey exemplify how international solidarity can address humanitarian crises, promote justice, and foster stronger bilateral cooperation in security and development.
