Somalia Advances Fisheries Sector Development and Blue Economy Through National Conference
Somalia Concludes 7th Fisheries Development Conference and Strengthens Blue Economy Agenda
Mogadishu – The Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy of Somalia concluded, on Saturday, the 7th Conference of the Fisheries Management and Development Council, which was held over two days with broad participation from relevant government authorities in the country’s maritime sector.
The conference was chaired by the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, H.E. Ahmed Hassan Adam, and attended by regional fisheries ministers, the Deputy Governor of Banadir, as well as several senior officials and sector experts.
Discussions focused on key priorities for developing Somalia’s fisheries sector, with an emphasis on promoting sustainable management of marine resources and ensuring that Somali communities directly benefit from the country’s rich maritime wealth.
Participants highlighted the importance of improving governance in the fisheries sector, enhancing infrastructure, and supporting local fishermen to increase productivity and improve service quality across the industry.
During the conference, the Minister presented a detailed report outlining the ministry’s strategic plans for advancing the fisheries sector and strengthening Somalia’s blue economy, which is considered a vital pillar for future economic growth.
He also noted that the ministry is currently implementing several projects in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), aimed at building sector capacity, promoting sustainability, and improving the management of marine resources.
The conference reflects the Somali government’s ongoing efforts to enhance coordination among fisheries institutions, develop effective policies, and ensure sustainable economic development through the optimal use of the country’s marine resources.
