Rehabilitation of the National University: A Step Toward Reviving Education in Somalia
In a significant move reflecting growing attention to the education sector in Somalia, the Minister of Education, H.E. Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, laid the foundation stone for the rehabilitation of the National University buildings in Mogadishu. This initiative is part of broader government efforts to rebuild educational infrastructure and restore the role of academic institutions as pillars of national development.
This project carries important meaning—not only in improving physical infrastructure, but also in reviving the National University as a center of knowledge and learning. For decades, the university has stood as a symbol of higher education in Somalia, producing generations of professionals who have contributed to the country’s progress. However, years of instability significantly impacted its facilities, making rehabilitation both necessary and urgent.
During the ceremony, the Minister called on residents currently occupying the university buildings to vacate them immediately to allow reconstruction work to begin. This step underscores the importance of reclaiming public property for its intended purpose—serving education and future generations.
For his part, the President of the National University, Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud, praised the initiative and commended the Ministry of Education’s efforts to improve the sector. He emphasized that rehabilitating the university will enhance the quality of education and provide a better environment for both students and faculty.
This project reflects the Somali government’s commitment to rebuilding state institutions, particularly in education, which is essential for sustainable development. Advancing education goes beyond infrastructure—it also involves improving curricula, training educators, and expanding access to learning opportunities.
In conclusion, the rehabilitation of the National University is more than just a construction project; it is a message of hope for a brighter future, where education plays a central role in driving stability and progress in Somalia.
