Somalia Strengthens Arab League Ties and Seeks Greater Representation

Cairo – Somalia's Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States, Ambassador Ali Abdi Awari, met with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil Fahmy, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between Somalia and the Arab League, as well as a number of issues of mutual interest.

During the meeting, Ambassador Awari conveyed the greetings and congratulations of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the Secretary-General on assuming his new responsibilities, expressing Somalia's support for his efforts to enhance joint Arab cooperation.

The ambassador also briefed the Secretary-General on the latest developments in Somalia, reaffirming the country's commitment to deepening coordination with the Arab League in support of shared Arab interests, stronger institutional cooperation, and regional priorities.

A key point raised during the discussions was Somalia's request for a fair share of senior positions within the League of Arab States' General Secretariat, particularly leadership roles in diplomatic missions and other permanent high-level posts.

For his part, Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy welcomed the visit and reaffirmed the Arab League's commitment to supporting Somalia and giving due consideration to its requests, with the aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing the objectives of joint Arab action.

The meeting concluded with Ambassador Awari expressing his appreciation for the warm reception and emphasizing Somalia's aspiration to further expand cooperation and coordination with the League of Arab States in the coming period.
