Somali Prime Minister Opens National Agriculture and Food Systems Investment Conference 2026

Mogadishu, August 11, 2026 – Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre officially opened the National Agriculture and Food Systems Investment Conference 2026 (NAFIS 2026) in Mogadishu, highlighting the government’s efforts to boost domestic production, develop the agricultural sector, and attract sustainable investment.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Barre said the conference reflects the government’s strategic vision to strengthen the national economy, increase production, and create promising investment opportunities in line with Somalia’s National Transformation Plan.

Somalia’s Agricultural Potential

The Prime Minister emphasized that Somalia has significant potential to achieve food security, citing its vast areas of arable land, available water resources, and the determination of Somali communities to achieve greater self-sufficiency.

He stressed that investment in agriculture and food systems is essential not only for Somalia but also for the wider Horn of Africa region.

According to the Prime Minister, increasing agricultural production can help strengthen the economy, support regional development, create employment opportunities for young people, generate income, and improve food self-sufficiency.

Strengthening Investment and Cooperation

Prime Minister Barre also called on institutions operating in Somalia to adapt to the country’s changing economic environment and strengthen cooperation with the government in support of national development priorities.

He underscored the importance of encouraging greater investment in agriculture and food systems to help advance Somalia’s food security goals, strengthen state institutions, and promote inclusive and sustainable economic development.

The NAFIS 2026 conference provides a platform for discussing investment opportunities in Somalia’s agricultural and food sectors while promoting stronger partnerships between the government and private sector.
