Somalia and Switzerland Strengthen Cooperation on Disaster Preparedness and Drought Response

Mogadishu, August 30, 2026: The Chairman of Somalia’s National Disaster Management Authority (SoDMA), Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, held a meeting today with a delegation from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to discuss humanitarian conditions, disaster risks, and ways to strengthen preparedness and response efforts across the country.

The meeting, attended by several officials from the SDC headquarters, focused particularly on the ongoing drought situation and preparations for the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon.

The two sides also discussed the importance of strengthening early warning systems, anticipatory action, and disaster preparedness, while improving coordination and cooperation between the Federal Government of Somalia, Federal Member States, and humanitarian partners.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its support for Somalia, particularly in the humanitarian sector, while strengthening cooperation and coordination frameworks with Somali institutions.

Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, SoDMA Chairman Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle emphasized the importance of investing in Somalia’s national disaster management systems and strengthening the capacity of government institutions.

He stressed the need to move away from a predominantly reactive approach—responding only after disasters occur—toward a more proactive and risk-based approach focused on early action, risk assessment, preparedness, and sustainable resilience-building.

The discussions come as Somalia continues to face significant humanitarian and climate-related challenges, highlighting the importance of stronger early warning mechanisms and preventive measures to protect vulnerable communities and reduce the impact of future disasters.
