AI and Social Media Transform Somalia’s Media Landscape
Mogadishu – September 7, 2026
Somalia’s media sector is undergoing rapid transformation as social media platforms, artificial intelligence, and digital influencers increasingly shape how people access, share, and engage with information.
Speaking at the National Strategic Communication Forum, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Abdifatah Qaim Mahmoud highlighted the major changes facing Somali media and the growing influence of new digital technologies.
The Minister noted that these developments present significant opportunities, including encouraging innovation, creating new jobs, expanding access to information, and strengthening public participation.
However, he also warned of challenges such as misinformation, misleading content, professional ethics, public trust, the need for stronger media skills, and the economic sustainability of media organizations.
According to the Minister, the National Strategic Communication Forum is more than a platform for discussing existing challenges. It provides an opportunity to help shape the future direction of Somalia’s media sector.
He stressed the importance of developing a free, responsible, professional, and economically sustainable Somali media sector that embraces technology and artificial intelligence while protecting professional ethics and maintaining public trust.
As digital transformation continues, the future of Somali media will increasingly depend on its ability to balance technological innovation with credibility, professionalism, and responsible journalism.
