Somalia Elected Alternate External Auditor of AFROSAI-Arabic for 2026–2029

Cairo, September 4, 2026 — Somalia has secured a new position within the regional audit community after the Auditor General of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Advocate Ahmed Issa Gutale, was elected Alternate External Auditor of AFROSAI-Arabic for the 2026–2029 term.

The election took place during the founding meeting of AFROSAI-Arabic, held in Cairo, Egypt. The organization serves as a sub-regional platform bringing together supreme audit institutions from African countries where Arabic is an official or widely used language.

The Auditor General of Algeria was elected External Auditor for the same three-year period.

Gutale Welcomes the Confidence

Following his election, Advocate Ahmed Issa Gutale thanked the organization’s nine members for their confidence and emphasized the importance of moving from the organization’s establishment phase toward operational and organizational excellence.

He highlighted the need to strengthen professional cooperation among member supreme audit institutions, noting that AFROSAI-Arabic provides an important platform for knowledge exchange, institutional capacity building, and the implementation of joint auditing programs.

Strengthening Regional Audit Cooperation

During the meeting, the Auditors General of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia also expressed their appreciation to the Auditor General of the League of Arab States for his active role in preparing and reviewing the organization’s founding documents.

The establishment of AFROSAI-Arabic marks a new step toward strengthening cooperation among African and Arab audit institutions, particularly through the exchange of professional expertise, knowledge, and best practices in public-sector auditing and oversight.

A New Regional Platform

AFROSAI-Arabic was officially launched and established on September 2, 2026, during its founding meeting hosted by the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The organization aims to promote cooperation among member supreme audit institutions, facilitate the exchange of expertise, strengthen institutional capacities, and support joint oversight initiatives.

Drawing on the approaches of organizations such as AFROSAI, ARABOSAI, and INTOSAI, AFROSAI-Arabic is expected to play an important role in advancing the performance and capabilities of supreme audit institutions across its member states.

Somalia’s election to the organization’s leadership structure represents an opportunity to further strengthen the country’s role in regional oversight cooperation and contribute to initiatives aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, good governance, and professional auditing standards.
