Somali Police and Opposition Clash in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, 24 September 2025 – Heavy clashes erupted today in Warta Nabadda district, Mogadishu, after Somali police forces and opposition members exchanged gunfire near the district’s police station.

Eyewitnesses and officials reported that the fighting began when opposition leaders, including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and politician Abdirahman Abdishakur, visited Siinaay market, where government forces were accused of mistreating civilians.

The exchange of fire caused casualties among security forces, opposition members, and civilians. Stray bullets even reached a nearby prison, though the exact number of deaths and injuries has not yet been confirmed.

The Federal Government of Somalia condemned the incident, describing it as an “armed attempt” by opposition politicians seeking power. In an official statement, the government accused the opposition of undermining national security and the rule of law.

This confrontation highlights the growing political tensions between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration and opposition leaders, fueling fears of further unrest in the capital.
