Somali PM Meets EU Envoy in Egypt to Discuss Security and Political Progress

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre held a high-level meeting on Monday with the European Union’s Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Dr. Annette Weber, during his working visit to Egypt. The discussions centered on enhancing bilateral relations, advancing Somalia’s security and governance agenda, and reviewing progress on ongoing political and economic reforms.

According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the meeting highlighted the strong partnership between Somalia and the European Union, emphasizing their shared commitment to stability, peacebuilding, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa.

Prime Minister Barre outlined the major achievements of his government over the past three years, underscoring significant improvements in national security and state-building. He noted the successful operations conducted against the al-Shabaab militant group, which have reclaimed key territories and improved safety in the capital, Mogadishu, and other regions. He also emphasized the rebuilding of Somalia’s national armed forces, which are increasingly taking over security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

On the economic front, the Prime Minister highlighted reforms aimed at strengthening public financial management, boosting domestic revenue, and fostering private sector growth. He pointed to the positive impact of these initiatives on social services, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

“The government remains committed to consolidating the gains made in peace, security, and development,” Prime Minister Barre said. “We appreciate the continued partnership of the European Union in supporting our reform agenda and helping Somalia move toward full sovereignty and economic resilience.”

Dr. Annette Weber praised the Somali government’s progress in recent years, particularly in promoting governance reforms and fostering political inclusivity. She reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to supporting Somalia’s stabilization process and long-term development through capacity building, humanitarian assistance, and investment in resilience programs.

“The European Union stands with Somalia as a reliable partner in achieving lasting peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development,” Dr. Weber stated. “We commend the progress made and encourage continued momentum in strengthening institutions and ensuring security for all citizens.”

The meeting also addressed regional cooperation and the importance of collective efforts to tackle shared challenges such as cross-border security, climate-related displacement, and economic integration within the Horn of Africa.

As Somalia continues its transition period, the dialogue between Prime Minister Barre and the EU Envoy underscores the country’s growing international engagement and commitment to progress. Both sides expressed optimism about future collaboration and agreed to maintain close coordination on key strategic priorities, including the security transition, political dialogue, and economic reforms.

This engagement marks another milestone in Somalia’s diplomatic outreach and its ongoing journey toward stability, self-reliance, and regional leadership.
