DefendDefenders: 20 Years of Championing Human Rights in Somalia and Africa

Since its founding in 2005 by Hassan Shire, DefendDefenders has grown from a one-man operation with a single computer in a shared office in Kampala, Uganda, into one of Africa’s most prominent human rights organizations. This year, the organization celebrates its 20th anniversary, reflecting two decades of dedication, courage, and unwavering commitment to defending human rights defenders (HRDs) across Somalia and the African continent.

Hassan Shire, who previously established the Dr. Ismail Jimcale Human Rights Center in 1996, laid the foundation for DefendDefenders with the vision of creating a strong network to support HRDs operating in some of Africa’s most challenging environments. From its headquarters in Kampala, Uganda, the organization has been instrumental in strengthening the capacity and resilience of Somali HRDs, often working in highly volatile security and political contexts.

Over the years, DefendDefenders has implemented a wide array of programs in Somalia:

Rapid Response Assistance: HRDs facing threats, attacks, or political pressures receive urgent financial and security support to ensure their protection.

Capacity Building and Training: Regular workshops on human rights awareness, digital security, and legal self-defense equip defenders and journalists with essential skills.

Psychosocial Support: Recognizing the intense pressure faced by HRDs, the organization provides counseling and support to help manage occupational stress.

Networking and Safe Spaces: Through initiatives like the Ubuntu Hub Cities Initiative, Somali HRDs gain access to secure housing and emergency relocation options during crises.

These programs reflect DefendDefenders’ holistic approach to safeguarding human rights, ensuring that defenders can continue their work safely while amplifying their voices locally and globally.

Across Africa, DefendDefenders operates from five major offices spanning East, Southern, and North Africa. With a dedicated team of over 200 professionals, the organization plays a key role in the AfricanDefenders network, connecting HRDs across the continent to share knowledge, strategies, and solidarity in the face of evolving challenges.

Among its innovative programs, the Ubuntu Hub Cities Initiative stands out, providing emergency relocation and safe haven for threatened HRDs. Its Capacity Building Programs strengthen leadership, community engagement, and digital advocacy skills. Meanwhile, its Advocacy and Solidarity Campaigns defend freedom of expression and the rights of HRDs on an international scale.

Celebrating two decades of achievements, Hassan Shire reflects: “A single person with one computer in the corner of a shared office quietly built something extraordinary. Today, DefendDefenders stands as a beacon of Africa supporting Africa.” The organization continues to honor its mission to protect the voices of those who defend human dignity and human rights.

Looking ahead, DefendDefenders pledges to expand its work in Somalia and across Africa, partnering with governments, civil society, and independent defenders to build a more just and peaceful society. Its 20-year journey is not just a milestone; it is a testament to the power of resilience, vision, and commitment in the face of adversity.

As DefendDefenders celebrates this historic anniversary, its legacy inspires current and future generations of HRDs to continue striving for justice, equality, and the protection of fundamental human rights.
