Somali Mental Health Pioneer Honored in Cairo for Decades of Humanitarian Service

In recognition of growing efforts to strengthen Somalia’s healthcare sector and expand mental health services, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, H.E. Ali Abdi Aware, received Dr. Abdulrahman Ali Awale, a pioneer in psychiatry, at the Somali Embassy in Cairo. The meeting highlighted appreciation for Dr. Awale’s decades-long humanitarian and professional contributions to mental health care and social support services for the Somali community.

During the meeting, the Ambassador praised Dr. Awale’s outstanding role in supporting patients with mental health conditions and providing essential humanitarian care to vulnerable groups. He emphasized that Dr. Awale’s work represents a model of dedication in both medical and humanitarian fields within Somalia and beyond.

Dr. Abdulrahman Ali Awale is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in psychiatry in the region. Since 2005, he has founded and managed the “Habib Mental Health and Rehabilitation Organization,” which has become one of the most prominent mental health institutions in East Africa. The organization operates several treatment centers in Mogadishu and surrounding areas, offering care to hundreds of patients suffering from mental health disorders, alongside shelter, rehabilitation, and social support services.

Beyond clinical work, Dr. Awale is actively involved in community awareness initiatives aimed at correcting misconceptions about mental illness. He conducts outreach programs in schools, universities, and places of worship, advocating for compassionate treatment and encouraging greater acceptance of mental health care as a vital part of overall well-being.

He has also contributed to institutional development in the sector, including the establishment of the first modern psychiatric hospital in Adado, which has received and treated hundreds of patients from various regions of Somalia and neighboring countries. The facility has played a key role in expanding access to specialized psychiatric care.

In response to ongoing challenges in the healthcare system, Dr. Awale continues to focus on training and mentoring young medical professionals in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. He is also involved in crisis management and humanitarian support programs for patients, despite limited resources, demonstrating a strong and sustained commitment to improving mental health services in Somalia.

This recognition in Cairo underscores the importance of regional cooperation in healthcare and highlights leading figures whose work continues to improve lives and support some of the most vulnerable communities in Somali society.
