Somalia and Egypt Sign Landmark Agreement to Boost Pharmaceutical Cooperation
In a significant step toward enhancing bilateral relations, Somalia and Egypt have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in the regulation and circulation of medicines, biological products, and medical devices.
The agreement was signed in Cairo between the Somali Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) and the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), in the presence of Somalia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Haji Adam, and the Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority, Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Farah Shire, Head of the Somali Medicines Regulatory Authority, and Dr. Tamer El-Husseiny, Vice Chairman of the Egyptian Drug Authority.
Key areas of cooperation include the exchange of technical expertise and regulatory information, strengthening pharmacovigilance systems, improving procedures for the registration and inspection of medical products, and supporting capacity-building programs for Somali pharmaceutical and healthcare professionals.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Somalia’s Minister of Health emphasized the importance of benefiting from Egypt’s extensive experience in pharmaceutical regulation. He noted that the agreement will contribute to modernizing Somalia’s regulatory framework, supporting ongoing health sector reforms, and improving the quality and safety of healthcare services available to citizens.
The partnership reflects Somalia’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare system and ensuring access to safe, effective, and high-quality medical products. It also highlights the growing cooperation between Somalia and Egypt in strategic sectors that directly impact public well-being and national development.
The signing ceremony was attended by Somalia’s Ambassador to Egypt, Ali Abdi Awari, Assistant Minister of Health Shafii Osman, and the Secretary-General of the Health Professions Council, Mohamed Mahmoud Adow, among other officials from both countries.
